What Is Fasting?
In Scripture, fasting is most commonly the practice of voluntarily abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose. Fasting is a way of saying, God I want You more than what I crave. It is not a way to earn God’s love. It is a way to respond to God’s love with focus and hunger.
In modern times, many Christians choose to fast things like social media, entertainment, or hobbies. That can be a great spiritual practice. For this season, we are calling our church to a food fast in some form for the full 21 days.
We are not aiming for perfection. We are aiming for pursuit.
Choosing Your Type of Fast
Choose a fast that is meaningful, sustainable, and safe. If you have medical conditions, are pregnant, have a history of disordered eating, or take medications that require food, consult your doctor and choose a different approach.
Here are several biblical and practical options:
Daniel Style Fast
A focused diet for a season
Often modeled as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and water
A great option for people who need structure without full abstinence
Liquid Only Fast
Nutritional liquids such as broths, smoothies, protein shakes, and water
If you choose this option, be wise and ensure you are getting necessary nutrients
Water Only Fast
This is the most intense option and is not recommended without medical guidance
If you are considering this, please consult a medical professional first
Remove a Specific Item
Removing one significant category from your diet for all 21 days
Examples include sugar, desserts, caffeine, soda, fast food, bread, meat, or snacks between meals
This is a powerful option when done with consistency and spiritual intention
Whatever you choose, make it a true sacrifice.
Then, when the craving shows up, let it become a cue to pray.
Why We Are Doing This?
We are doing this because we want to begin the year with God first, not God last.
We want to be a people who listen before we lead.
We want our appetite for God to grow.
We want our church to be spiritually awake and united.
We want to contend in prayer for our families, our city, and the future.
This is a reset.
This is alignment.
This is hunger.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to fast all 21 days?
Yes, we are inviting everyone to participate for the full 21 days, but the form of the fast can vary. Choose something meaningful and wise for you.
What if I mess up?
Do not quit. Restart at the next meal. There is no condemnation here. Keep going!
Can I fast something other than food?
You can always choose to set aside additional things, but our church focus for this season is a food fast in some form.
What about kids and students?
We encourage parents to guide children in age-appropriate ways. Often, this looks like removing sweets, snacks, or a favorite treat while emphasizing prayer and Scripture.
